Annan: World faces 'crisis of governance'
The worldwide economic recession has exposed a "crisis of global governance" that can only be addressed by the radical reform of the United Nations, former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Wednesday as the World Economic Forum got under way in Switzerland.

Several things worth noting in the news lately:

1) the amount of unrest. Riots, protest, looting... it's widespread. Every continent.

2) Brazil and India rising, along with China and Russia. And the Middle East connection to everyone and everything.

3) Along with energy companies, see railroads, dry ports, shipping, and mining. Odd things going on there.

Creeping totalitarianism of every stripe is always a given.

It is not flesh and blood we're up against--the meatbags are just vessels for the deeper forces at war here.

You are walking in the Word or in the World.

Life or death.

Make the choice.
Here they be, in some sorta order:

President Obama Does First Formal TV Interview as President with Al-Arabiya

Obama tells Arabic network US is 'not your enemy'

Obama tells Al Arabiya peace talks should resume --Their site, w/ transcript.
In his first interview since taking office, President Barack Obama told Arab satellite station Al Arabiya that Americans are not the enemy of the Muslim world and said Israel and the Palestinians should resume peace negotiations.

“My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy,” Obama told Al Arabiya’s Hisham Melhem in an interview broadcast Tuesday morning.

During the presidential election campaign last year, Obama vowed to improve U.S. ties with the Muslim world and after he won promised to give a speech in a Muslim capital in his first 100 days in office. The President repeated this pledge in the interview but did not give a time or specify the venue.

Interview - Obama's 'Window of Opportunity' for Improved Russia, EU Ties
Interviewee: Charles A. Kupchan, Senior Fellow for Europe Studies, Council on Foreign Relations

Charles A. Kupchan, CFR senior fellow for Europe studies and a professor of international relations at Georgetown University, says that because of Obama's "popularity and the departure of President Bush," there is a "window of opportunity to improve relations between the United States and Russia and between the United States and the European Union." But on the contentious issue of the deployment of missile defense systems in Poland and the Czech Republic, which has riled the Russians, Kupchan thinks the Obama administration will not cancel the project. There will, however, "be a deliberation about when and how to deploy such a system, and that might involve moving at a slower timetable to ensure that the technology is ready," Kupchan says.

Global Taxes and Global TV Now on the Agenda

In addition to global taxes, "The Global Agenda 2009" report urges creation of a global television channel.

"Media has the capacity to connect the world, bridging cultures and peoples, and telling us who we are and what we mean to each other. The media can also ensure that no voice goes unheard," it says. "We believe that this new moment also calls for a new media platform, across all media channels, a global non-profit ‘CNN' providing a new form of independent journalism to inform, illuminate and deepen knowledge about issues that improve the state of the world."

The report doesn't explain how this new global TV channel will be financed. But global taxes cannot be ruled out.

Perhaps this new era of transparency and disclosure can start with disclosing details about media sponsorship and backing of the World Economic Forum and its plans for "global governance."

He noted in his talk that a "major" gas pipeline crosses the fault near Marianna. Al-Shukri said the company that owned the pipeline - which he declined to name - was building a new line through the area, mirroring the old one's path. The scientist said the new pipes being laid were large enough for a man to walk through.

Indonesians Cheer On Solar Eclipse

Sunday, January 25, 2009

I had a horrible, horrible dream Tuesday night.

Horrific. I woke up weeping.

But it can be summed up in two passages of scripture:

1 Samuel 13:5-14

5 The Philistines assembled to fight Israel, with three thousand [a] chariots, six thousand charioteers, and soldiers as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They went up and camped at Micmash, east of Beth Aven. 6 When the men of Israel saw that their situation was critical and that their army was hard pressed, they hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in pits and cisterns. 7 Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead.
Saul remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking with fear. 8 He waited seven days, the time set by Samuel; but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and Saul's men began to scatter. 9 So he said, "Bring me the burnt offering and the fellowship offerings. [b] " And Saul offered up the burnt offering. 10 Just as he finished making the offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him.

11 "What have you done?" asked Samuel.
Saul replied, "When I saw that the men were scattering, and that you did not come at the set time, and that the Philistines were assembling at Micmash, 12 I thought, 'Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the LORD's favor.' So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering."

13 "You acted foolishly," Samuel said. "You have not kept the command the LORD your God gave you; if you had, he would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time. 14 But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him leader of his people, because you have not kept the LORD's command."

Luke 12:35-48

35"Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, 36like men waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. 37It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. I tell you the truth, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them. 38It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night. 39But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. 40You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."

41Peter asked, "Lord, are you telling this parable to us, or to everyone?"

42The Lord answered, "Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his servants to give them their food allowance at the proper time? 43It will be good for that servant whom the master finds doing so when he returns. 44I tell you the truth, he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 45But suppose the servant says to himself, 'My master is taking a long time in coming,' and he then begins to beat the menservants and maidservants and to eat and drink and get drunk. 46The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the unbelievers.

47"That servant who knows his master's will and does not get ready or does not do what his master wants will be beaten with many blows. 48But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.

Do not falter. Do not lose hope. Wait on the LORD. The time is at hand.

Speak light into darkness, and do not regard the temporal consequences.

World Economic Forum
"Committed to improving the state of the world"

Point of View

The World Economic Forum has unveiled the programme for its 39th Annual Meeting in Davos-Klosters. Under the theme “Shaping the Post-Crisis World”, more than 2,500 participants from 96 countries will convene, including a record 41 heads of state or government. Key finance, foreign affairs, trade and energy ministers will also join heads of non-governmental organizations, social entrepreneurs and religious leaders at the Meeting.

Politicians, not bankers, lead way at Davos
Speaking at a press conference in Geneva this week, the forum's chairman and founder, Klaus Schwab, said that the world was clearly unable to cope with the complexities of modern financial structures.

"The annual meeting 2009 is one of the most crucial in the near 40-year history of the World Economic Forum," he said. "The extraordinary participation in terms of political and business leaders … demonstrates that our annual meeting will be the place where key actors can address both a crisis of unprecedented scope and, at the same time, the sort of world we collectively want to see emerging once the crisis is over.

"What we are experiencing is the birth of a new era, a wake-up call to overhaul our institutions, our systems and, above all, our way of thinking."

Financial Crisis Keeps Australian PM From Davos

Economic crisis dominates Davos agenda
Heads of state, influential politicians, business leaders and global power brokers will gather in the Swiss Alps next week for the World Economic Forum -- with the perilous state of the planet's financial system set to top this year's agenda.

Sombre mood awaits at Davos

World leaders ready for crisis forum
GENEVA (Reuters) - World leaders and policymakers will gather in record numbers at next week's annual Davos forum to discuss how to overcome the worst global economic crisis in 80 years, organizers said.

Obama economics team stay away from Davos: organisers
Say, that's odd:
GENEVA (AFP) — The new US administration will send only one of President Barack Obama's close aides to the World Economic Forum's meeting in Davos next week instead of key economic figures, the organisers said Friday.

The news dashed the WEF's hopes that the new National Economic Council chief Lawrence Summers and possibly Treasury nominee Timothy Geithner might join business and political leaders in the Swiss Alps to discuss ways out of the global economic crisis.

"Both have been cancelled and replaced by an adviser to Obama, Valerie Jarrett," a spokesman for the WEF told AFP.

Jarrett, who co-chaired Obama's transition team, is the president's assistant for intergovernmental relations and public liaison and a close associate of the former senator.

Psalm 94

1 O LORD, the God who avenges,
O God who avenges, shine forth.

2 Rise up, O Judge of the earth;
pay back to the proud what they deserve.

3 How long will the wicked, O LORD,
how long will the wicked be jubilant?

4 They pour out arrogant words;
all the evildoers are full of boasting.

5 They crush your people, O LORD;
they oppress your inheritance.

6 They slay the widow and the alien;
they murder the fatherless.

7 They say, "The LORD does not see;
the God of Jacob pays no heed."

8 Take heed, you senseless ones among the people;
you fools, when will you become wise?

9 Does he who implanted the ear not hear?
Does he who formed the eye not see?

10 Does he who disciplines nations not punish?
Does he who teaches man lack knowledge?

11 The LORD knows the thoughts of man;
he knows that they are futile.

12 Blessed is the man you discipline, O LORD,
the man you teach from your law;

13 you grant him relief from days of trouble,
till a pit is dug for the wicked.

14 For the LORD will not reject his people;
he will never forsake his inheritance.

15 Judgment will again be founded on righteousness,
and all the upright in heart will follow it.

16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked?
Who will take a stand for me against evildoers?

17 Unless the LORD had given me help,
I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death.

18 When I said, "My foot is slipping,"
your love, O LORD, supported me.

19 When anxiety was great within me,
your consolation brought joy to my soul.

20 Can a corrupt throne be allied with you—
one that brings on misery by its decrees?

21 They band together against the righteous
and condemn the innocent to death.

22 But the LORD has become my fortress,
and my God the rock in whom I take refuge.

23 He will repay them for their sins
and destroy them for their wickedness;
the LORD our God will destroy them.

U.S. Releases Nuclear Complex Modernization Details

A 'Bad' Bank Can Solve Our Problems - WSJ.com
As bank shares plunge to new lows around the world, it seems we have entered the next stage of the financial crisis -- most likely the last chapter in this horror story. The final word will probably be nationalization of the major financial institutions in the United States and the United Kingdom and in many other countries.

No, I'm afraid we're just getting started.

2 Corinthians 4

Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not lose heart. Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God. And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Do not lose heart.
Do not lose heart.

Researchers find Moors built with powdered bones
Moors, of course, were the Muslim hordes that covered Spain from 711 to 1492.

"Cardell said there is evidence that the bone powder, mostly from pigs, may have been used in other Moorish structures in the area but so far there is nothing to indicate it was used in the Alhambra itself."

So pigs are horrible and unclean, but you can cook them and use their bones for building? Nice.

Mining Company Announces Potential Find
WINDHOEK – Canadian mining company Etruscan Resources announced that additional surface samples from its Lofdal permit in northern Namibia have indicated that rare earth elements (REEs) occur and could be of potential economic significance.

The company, which has been exploring for gold and diamonds in Africa for over 13 years, has been exploring for iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) in two areas in Namibia: in the northern part along the southern and eastern margins of a large basement complex (Kamanjab Project), and in the central area covering a volcano-sedimentary belt of the Rehoboth Volcano-Sedimentary Sequence (Witvlei Project), east of the capital.

The continuing search for IOCG deposits has gained momentum in Canadian mineral exploration due to their large size potential and polymetallic grades of mineralization, including sizeable amounts of uranium.

Both Colombia and Venezuela house Lebanese merchant communities where affinity and extortion have fashioned compliant agents for Hezbollah, which is also known to be allied with the FARC narco-guerillas of Colombia, the government of Venezuela and arms dealers like Viktor Bout of Russia.

Clandestine transportation of Hezbollah agents, money and technology--even for nuclear weapons--became much easier in 2007 when Chavez and Ahmadinejad instituted weekly Iran Air flights between Caracas and Tehran (with one stop, Damascus). There is no immigration and passport control on either side, and in Caracas the plane has its own entrance and exit monitored by Chavez's secret police.
