Media ponder 'energy chess game'
Turkish writers are pleased about the Nabucco gas pipeline deal, which was signed by Turkey, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania on Monday.

Azerbaijan-Gazprom agreement puts Nabucco in jeopardy
Russian gas company Gazprom signed a deal with State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) in Baku last week in connection with the first phase of the Shah Deniz gas field to transfer 500 million cubic meters of gas to Europe under the auspices of Gazprom. Seen as a potential supplier for the Nabucco gas pipeline, Baku's step raised some questions regarding Nabucco's gas supply problem.

A recognized Chechen human rights activist was found dead this afternoon hours after witnesses said she was abducted from her home. The body of Natalya Estemirova, a 50-year-old single mother, was discovered this afternoon in the woods of neighboring republic Ingushetia, shot twice in the head, the Ingush Interior Ministry confirmed Tuesday. This morning, four men confronted her as she left her home in the Chechen capital Grozny, forced her into a car and drove away, according to work colleagues who spoke to witnesses.

The Zimbabwe-ification of South Africa?

The dilapidated state of infrastructure and widespread poverty are the results of the destruction of property rights and the rule of law by the government of Zimbabwe. Yet South Africa's new Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, Gugile Nkwinti, clearly has not been to Zimbabwe in recent years. Speaking in parliament late last month, he announced that the ANC government would scrap its current "willing buyer willing seller" land redistribution policy, which allows the government to acquire land only at a market price and only with the consent of the land owner, and replace it with "less costly, alternative methods of land acquisition." The new policy will almost certainly include some form of land expropriation that could spell disaster for the South African economy.

Reclusive Turkmenistan cracks open the door
TURKMENBASHI, Turkmenistan - Four white-marble hotels opened here in June on a spit of sand by a landlocked sea-the beginnings of what is billed as Central Asia's answer to Las Vegas, an opulent $5 billion oasis of seaside villas, casinos, an artificial island and a ski center.

The resort-to-be stands out in this arid country the size of California, where camels clop down dirt roads and bedraggled Soviet-era apartment blocks doze in the blistering desert heat. Yet Turkmenistan also sits atop the world's fifth-largest reserves of natural gas, and is rapidly emerging as a key player in global energy markets.

Gazprom counting on systemic solution to gas problem

Gazprom: Russia's ministry of ambition
Undeterred by the global slowdown, Russia's state-run energy leviathan Gazprom has pushed ahead with an expansion masterplan of huge ambition that has raised questions over its true motives.

Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller has warned Europe - keen to break Russia's stronghold on gas supplies - against turning the issue of energy diversification into a "fetish."

But analysts say it is the Russian gas giant's own actions that are now bordering on the abnormal, with deals often being motivated by factors like politics or pride rather than economic sense.

"Gazprom has acquired the function of the foreign energy relations ministry," said Mikhail Korchemkin, director of the East European Gas Analysis think tank.

"Like the ministry, it's being driven by factors other than profit."

Israel accuses Lebanon of violating UNSC resolution
Israel accused Lebanon of violating United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 on Tuesday after a Hizbullah arms cache hidden inside a southern Lebanese town accidentally exploded.

The blast occurred inside the village of Hirbet Selm, some 20 kilometers north of the Israeli-Lebanese border, south of the Litani River and within the area which falls under the mandate of the UNIFIL multi-national force.

According to Israeli defense officials, the cache was hidden in a storehouse inside the village and contained dozens of 122-millimeter Katyusha rockets as well as high-powered machine guns. Some of the rockets reportedly flew into the sky.

Israel Authorizes More Weapons for PA Forces
In recent weeks, Israel has dismantled the large majority of checkpoints throughout Judea and Samaria, in an attempt to allow Palestinian Authority Arabs free movement between PA cities, as demanded by the United States. And in yet another "gesture" on the eve of what could be a critical meeting between Defense Minister Ehud Barak and U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell Monday, Barak has authorized the transfer of 1,000 Kalashnikov rifles to forces controlled by PA chief Mahmoud Abbas.
...
Dayton: PA Troops a Winning Team
PA troops will also be able to use the Kalashnikovs and armored vehicles more effectively than they might have been able to in the past, thanks to the high-level troop training program directed by U.S. General Keith Dayton. Dayton, whose official title is U.S. Security Coordinator for Israel and the Palestinian Authority, has already trained over 2,000 PA soldiers in advanced combat tactics, and he plans on training an additional 2,000.

Speaking at a Washington think-tank last month, Dayton was quoted as saying that his work has created a "new man" among PA residents. "For the first time, I think it's fair to say that the Palestinian security forces feel they are on a winning team," he said.

US armtwists Israeli firm on IAF deal: Report - India
Israeli newspaper Jerusalem Post reported that US has pressurised Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to back out of partnership with Swedish aerospace company Saab, which is fielding its Gripen fighter for the MMRCA contract.

The Israeli defence ministry ordered IAI to pull out of the deal with Saab after Pentagon expressed concern that US technology would be integrated into the Gripen offered to India. "The stated concern was that western technology in Israeli hands would make its way to the Indians," an Israeli official told the newspaper.

But what was found "strange" with the US request was that American aviation majors Boeing and Lockheed Martin are themselves in the fray for the lucrative MMRCA deal.

Israeli officials said US had probably intervened because if IAI competed for the deal with Saab, it would force Boeing and Lockheed Martin to lower their prices.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard acknowledges taking a bigger role in nation's security
Reporting from Beirut -- The top leaders of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard publicly acknowledged they had taken over the nation's security during the post-election unrest and warned late Sunday, in a threat against a reformist wave led by Mir-Hossein Mousavi, that there was no middle ground in the ongoing dispute over the reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of the elite military branch, said the guard's takeover of the nation's security had led to "a revival of the revolution."

Security Forces Crack Down on Defiant Protesters in Iran
TEHRAN, July 9 -- Thousands of anti-government demonstrators were attacked with batons and tear gas by security forces Thursday as they tried to gather around Tehran University for the first protests in about two weeks, defying warnings from the authorities that they would crush any demonstrations.

The protests were called to commemorate an attack on students at the university in 1999. The demonstrators are using such anniversaries and special occasions to rally people in public. Demonstrators and Web sites said the next possible date is the second-term inauguration of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which is expected next month. Several national and religious celebrations also are coming up in the months ahead.

Siemens backs €400bn plan to harvest energy from Africa's deserts
Global electrical engineering group Siemens had thrown its weight behind an ambitious project to harvest solar and wind energy from the deserts of North Africa to supply the growing electricity needs of both the region and Europe, managing board member Dr Siegfried Russwurm confirmed on Thursday.

The project, dubbed 'Desertec', could emerge as the biggest development project in Africa's history and involve a total investment of €400-billion. Its proponents believe it could supply 15% to 20% of Europe's electricity requirements by 2050.
